A pump is a machine for transporting liquids or increasing the pressure of liquids
A pump is a machine for transporting liquids or increasing the pressure of liquids. It transmits the mechanical energy of the prime mover or other external energy to the liquid, increasing the energy of the liquid. Pumps are mainly used to transport liquids including water, oil, acidic and alkaline liquids, emulsions, suspensions, and liquid metals, and can also transport liquid-gas mixtures and liquids containing suspended solids.
Marine pumps are very important during the operation of ships, just like the water pumps and other essential transportation processes we use at home. They play a crucial role as important components and parts of the ship during its operation.
The lifting of water is extremely important for human life and production. Various water-lifting devices have existed since ancient times, such as the chain pump in Egypt (17th century BC), the well sweep in China (17th century BC), the windlass (11th century BC), and the waterwheel (1st century AD). Additionally, in the 3rd century BC, Archimedes invented the screw pump, which can steadily and continuously lift water several meters high, and its principle is still utilized in modern screw pumps.
The emergence of rotary pumps is related to the increasingly diverse requirements for liquid transportation in industry. As early as 1588, there were records of four-blade sliding vane pumps, followed by various other types of rotary pumps. However, until the 19th century, rotary pumps still had significant drawbacks such as large leakage, high wear, and low efficiency. In the early 20th century, people solved problems related to rotor lubrication and sealing, and with the use of high-speed electric motors, rotary pumps suitable for higher pressures, medium and small flow rates, and various viscous liquids rapidly developed. The variety of types of rotary pumps and the types of liquids they can transport are unmatched by other types of pumps.
